The village of Imerovigli
Romance, view and peace are the three words which most accurately describe the village of Imerovigli.
The view and natural beauty are simply spectacular: bare red and black earth meets the deep blue waters...
This linear settlement was developed on the highest point, 300 metres above the famous caldera, and was inhabited as early as the mid 16th century. The name dates back to the pirates occupation and means 'day observation post'.
The castle of Skaros has a long history and is worth a visit. When the Venetian leader, Marko Sanouthos, conquered the island in 1207, he raised the flag on the castle. It was at this point that Thira became known as Santorini (Santa Irene). The castle guarded the western entrance to the island from attacks and was never defeated during its 600 years of existence.
Should you visit Imerovigli, you should follow the old foot path to Fira. This 20 minute stroll takes you along the rim of the caldera and offers awesome views.
Restaurants and traditional tavernas are plentiful in this picturesque village.
